Girls Night In is a versatile all-female band that challenges gender biases and inequalities surrounding the music scene. Creating original music which blends Nu jazz and folk songwriting, Girls Night In experiments with contemporary textures and styles. Fronted by a jazz-trained vocalist, the group features guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, saxophone, cello, and viola to promote rich, layered arrangements and dynamic, collaborative ensemble playing.
The band formed at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) – a subsection of The University Of Melbourne. Whilst surrounded by a considerate and talented male cohort, the members of Girls Night In wanted to create a space of their own – one that felt supportive, collaborative, and confidence-building. Forming the band allowed them to lean into their individual strengths, encourage one another creatively, and develop their group sound in an environment where everyone feels heard. This sense of mutual support is central to how they write, perform, and connect as a group, and it clearly translates into their music.
